“Crack the slider, then send California’s little ass inside to unlock the doors,” Moon explained.

“Then what?” California asked. His eyes scanning the inside of the truck, its window tint dark, forcing him to strain with his face right against the glass.

“It’s an older truck, but it’s got a column-mounted ignition that I can crack and hot-wire pretty quick, which is going to save us time. So get on up in the bed and jimmy that slider open,” Moon replied.

Then out of nowhere came the screeching sound of tires gripping pavement as the sound of an unseen vehicle coming to a complete stop ripped through the air.

“Take cover,” Yorgey said, keeping his words soft but firm.

The four men dispersed, taking up cover along a row of cars, protecting them from where the sound had emitted from, North Harbor Drive.

Along the road, right behind the parking lot was a gated entrance, presumably manned by sentries at one point yet now shut tightly by a mechanical chain linked gate that, when operational, slid back and forth as entry was granted.

Moon was the closest of all four men, peering over the hood and front bumper of a dark silver Honda Accord. He seemed to blend in with his surroundings while being no more than thirty yards from the gate. “Boys, I have a red pickup that’s right outside the gate, and two men just jumped out from the bed…with chains. Standby and stay low.”

Still using his NODs, he adjusted the gain down to account for the rising sun. His vision was unobstructed, weapon up and resting on the car’s protruding bumper, ready to fire, if need be, as he watched with bated breath.

The men ran to the gate and hooked the chains onto the fence.

Moon knew immediately what was about to happen, and they would have to act fast or be caught out in the open with their proverbial pants down, so to speak.

“Get ready to move on me,” Moon radioed.

No one replied, yet all four men were on the same page. The other three were simply waiting for Moon to act, and they would step into their tactical roles as they saw fit.

The driver wheeled the truck into a position that allowed the man to back it up to the entry gate. Its metal tubing sat on top of a rolling system and track built into the ground, yet no tire deflation devices could be seen.

The strange men had hooked one chain to each end of the gate, then ran the chains back to a central pulling point at the rear of the truck. Moon watched as the men gave a thumbs-up to the driver and ran off out of the way of the truck as the driver tightened the slack in the chain.

“They’re coming in. Just be ready. That truck is ours,” Moon called out.

California looked off at each man and understood they were most likely going to kill the men to facilitate acquiring means of transportation. Then he had a thought:
